Common questions

How are the books chosen?

Our entire collection is curated by a group of experts drawn from education and children's publishing. The books sent to each child are are personalised to their age, gender and interest. The adult responsible for the account can also see our selection 'queue' in advance. Many parents use the queue to add books relevant to upcoming events (holidays, school projects, festivals etc).

Can a child keep the books?

Of course - we all love to keep special books. If a child wants to keep any of the books they're sent, simply hold onto them and the account owner (typically Mum or Dad) will be charged 50% of RRP. Many of our members use Bookabees as a super "try before you buy" service.

How old are the books?

You won't find any tired, dog eared books on our shelves. Although we're a lot like a library, a book will have been read by a maximum of 5 members. As soon as a book becomes "well loved" by our readers we pass it to a children's charity.

It's a subscription so will I be charged beyond the gift?

No. To activate the gift, an adult needs to set up the child's Bookabees membership (this is typically one of the child's parents). Set up is a really easy process and usually takes 3 minutes. At the end of your gift subscription, Mum or Dad will be notified and can choose to continue the subscription with their payment details.

How do the books arrive & return?

We use standard Royal Mail postage. Our books are packaged in a personalised box that fits through normal letter boxes. This means no waiting for a courier and the child can collect it from the doormat themselves. Returning books is really easy. At the end of the month (each book can actually be kept for up to 2 months), simply put them in the pre-paid packaging and drop them in any postbox.
